What are Gallstones?

Gallstones are hard materials that form inside the gallbladder. The formation of gallstones is considered as the most common disorder of the gallbladder. Gallstones form when excess cholesterol in the bile crystallizes, causing the gallbladder not to empty properly. They can vary in size- a minute grain of sand to a large ping-pong ball. The gallbladder can then become inflamed and/or infected, this is known as cholecystitis. Although an infection can be treated with antibiotics, the repeated formation of gallstones often requires laparoscopic gallstone surgery.

Treatment

Diagnosis:

The surgeon will perform a physical examination and recommend imaging tests to diagnose gallstones. During the physical examination, the doctor will check for pain in the abdomen. The tests can be:

Blood tests: To measure the amount of bilirubin in your blood and to determine how well the liver is functioning.

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP): A tiny camera is threaded down to your gastrointestinal (GI) tract to help the doctor identify gallstones stuck in your bile duct.

Abdominal ultrasound and CT scan: For better imaging of the gallbladder to analyze the signs of gallstones.

Surgery

Gallstone surgery is known as cholecystectomy where a Surgeon removes gallbladder. In laparoscopic cholecystectomy, the doctor makes a small incision and inserts a laparoscope that has a tiny video camera mounted on top and surgical tools. The tube, camera, and tools are inserted and the surgeon performs the surgery while looking at a TV monitor to remove the gallbladder. In addition, the recovery time is much faster and the operative scar is cosmetically better as well.
